Well, yesterday was the first time in a great while that me and SheDev saw a live show ... actually most credit goes to UnM for sniffing out a Lisa Loeb performance here
So one pair of Nike shorts later now ripped and destroyed, ex-gf sightings, lines longer than truth pulled like taffy, and almost causing UnM a panic attack waiting for us to arrive ... and one Donnas CD finally returned to its original owner

I suppose this whole blog thing is supposed to be transparent ... like I'm not supposed to tell you that while I'm penning this sucker, I'm listening to a Metallica live show from 1994 from iTunes (courtesy Metallivault) ... I'm hella enjoying the sounds, its a great concert recording or bootleg, whatever --- sounds great --- right now Jasonic is playing the hell out a bass solo
Ok, so anyways, as a changeup in some of the things we do during the weekend, me and SheDev joined the anti-Servco to watch a live performance by Lisa Loeb and her special guests
Some of you may recognize that once upon a time the Sanrio girl had a backing band called 9 Stories ... I was gonna say 9 Steps --- sounds like self-help ... ha
Anyways, if you were one of the 671 and a few more at the show ... you were treated to a pretty cool night of music ... and funny musings by Lisa Loeb --- it really reminded me of the VH1 Storytellers format
So basically an acoustic night with Lisa and spoken word
In a week of admissions, again I must admit something ... I have never owned a Lisa Loeb CD ... I own other CDs with her music on it ... paradox? nah, I just never owned any of her stuff
The extent of recognizable songs to me from Lisa that I know by actual title is two songs: Stay and I Do ... I know other songs just not by title ... and boy, was I surprised she didn't play her hit "Freebird' despite the urgings of one particularly shout over everyone fan ... ha
What is great about the performance we saw is that Lisa is in possession of some seriously interesting songwriting skills ... that's actually why she was here ... to participate and co-teach, I believe, a songwriting seminar at Kauai for their songwriting festival
And we had the benefit of seeing some of her cohorts from the festival show up and play with her ... a real highlight of the show was a very energetic Barry Flanagan doing a guitar duet with her on "Everyday" and putting in some of the most serious vibrato-action on an acoustic that I've seen in a long time
The other highlight was Dweezil Zappa ... and darn it, if he didn't steal the whole damn show with his lifting solos from buddy Edward VH ... only on 25 amps ... ha
Sounded darn good too ... that's the closest I ever expect to get next to a EVH solo for the rest of my existence on the planet ... so thanks Dweezil ... Dweezil also played lead on a really great cover of Papa Frank's Black Napkins ... cool
Throw in an appearance by John Cruz and a duet with Lisa and he on a Guy Cruz ballad which was smoking ... and it was a really great musical night
I know, it seems like I'm talking more about the others than Lisa ... don't get me wrong, Lisa is great in her own way ... but she also plays great in tandem with her guests ... and I'm thinking depending where you see her, she may call up other cool co-performers to do some songs ... and it'll probably be good too
So yeah, a great time was had by the primarily SupeRaceUptyJp chica crowd, well I shouldn't say that ... there were enough hao squareds to fill a room up with leather sandals to the ceiling ... ha ... and so so many boyfriends who were doing it out of love for their dates .... right ... ha
So yeah, at the end of the night, I think me and SheDev realized how much we like live shows that are fun to be at ... and I think UnM got his stuff signed, including his Donnas CD ... ha ... not
As we leave to the acoustic intro of Unforgiven ... oops it switched into Nothing Else Matters ... see how much I know
LA you got Lisa next with MatchBox and SugarRay at Staples --- that's gonna be a show ... enjoy, we sure did
hey shedev
wheres the review of Bruce Almighty??? It would be cool if you and Hukilau could do a Sisko and Eggbert deal on a review of something. heheheh
thats great that you got your stuff signed
... fun stuff, fun night
oh and before i forget, like i just did by pressing POST too soon... Lisa was awesome in concert. I really have been waiting for the last 4 years for her to get her ass over to Hawaii. What seemed to overshadow her was her counterparts. Dweezil was pretty much the show stealer with his very matter of fact comedy as well as guitar prowess.
Most impressive though was Lisa's superb guitar skills. Not that chicks can't play guitar... this gal blew me away. She got her chops down. What was even better was actually being able to LISTEN to her songs and lyrics... there was nothing but her and guitar so no distractions. Shes a great story teller and artist... she makes me not want to play guitar but inspires me to practice more at the same time....
Kudos for a great night!
yep... i got my Lisa and Dweezil stuff signed. I was bummed because no one was with me to take a photo with them but I took a photo of each of them signing my stuff. They were really nice and patient with everyone. It was nice to actually be able to nervously talk to big stars. VERY COOL!
