When people just don't try --- I was faced with this dilemma many times this weekend while reading my peers' papers. I'm not saying that my paper rules or anything but it follows format and content requirements (like a good paper should? ha)
Anyways, reading some of the papers I began to understand why professors sometimes get frustrated with students. It has become clear to me over the past two months or so that you can totally tell when people don't put in the required effort on assignments --- I can sniff it out totally now
It's funny because sometimes people attach notes like take it easy on me, etc. and then their paper is pretty okay overall. But the ones who admit nothing and their paper just totally is crud -- I don't know what to say -- and it's funny because it's not for lack of grey matter. If these people would only do a good faith effort, it would probably be pretty okay, in fact it might actually be good
Enough of that, on an interesting note, I find myself kind of wandering the Net looking at people's assessments of albums and CDs that I have in common with them. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I disagree -- but I do find that --- SURPRISE, SURPRISE --- personal taste has a lot to do with it
A very common taste in metal that I have found is people that like the epic metal sound or power metal sound --- ie. the Maiden, old Queensryche, Iced Earth, etc. --- what I have found is that there are a lot of bands appropriating that sound even today but like blending it with like Europe, Dokken, or 80s pop metal style
Human Fortress --- oh boy, these guys sound like Europe, Dokken, Maiden, and concept album era Queensryche --- and boy does it sound weird to me, but I suppose that if you preferred groove, hooks, yet with power --- you'd like them a lot
On another note, what the hell has happened to Queensryche? I question openly because right now their label is doing the remasters trip with their catalog. So, I've been rocking out to clearer sounding "Queen of the Reich" off their debut EP ... I didn't so much mind their slowing it down or going concept on us with Operation Mindcrime and Empire ... but their new album Tribe is totally ridiculous, it sounds like Creed --- I mean, yeah I realize some people like Creed, more power to you, but it shows an alarming lack of creative direction (and I think I read somewhere that one of the members is so pissed off with the sound that he quit) ... again, we are confronted with the dilemma of the quote "Metal" genre
I read reviews and some reviewers say, ok you get no experimentation, you get that
