I know that the conventional wisdom is that tribute albums TOTALLY SUCK --- and most of the time, I would wholeheartedly agree with that assessment
Well, stupid fool that I am, I decided to roll the dice and pick up a lounge tribute to the songs of Ozzy and the Sabbs --- and you know what, it's a damn fun CD to listen to -- my pick of the week, especially if you like the goofy goodness that is lounge music
Sabbath in the Suburbs: A+
It opens with a wonderful salsa rendition of IRON MAN that must be heard to be believed --- really cool stuff, my gf was like what is that, that's a remake right? she liked it, I really like it a lot
Let me just say, I like every single redo on this disc. The disc also features:
ia pseudo slowed down surfer cover of Paranoid that is excellent --- a dadada-ish mambo version of Mr. Crowley, with really cool spanish nylon guitar soloing ---a beach boys harmonies fun version of Crazy Train that sounds Weezerish
And in my opinion, the best redo in terms of creativity, a pseudo dark waltz with an eerie tenor version of Bark at the Moon --- really cool; Shot in the Dark gets the contempo jazzy remake do with scatty vocals, really fresh stuff --- these two tracks are pretty hard to tell that they were straightforward rockers in another incarnation
A 50s guitar ballad redo of Flying High Again, sounds like background music to a Happy Days episode -- I Don't Know gets the disco treatment, the vocals are a bit too cheesy for my taste, but the concept of the arrangement is cool -- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath gets the snappy 60s lounge traditional makeover, cool jazzy vocals
There is also one original called "bubbles", another nice number --- Overall, this CD is a really competent and creative redo of classic Ozzy and Black Sabbath songs that you don't really have to be as hardcore an Ozzy/BSabb fan as your author is to enjoy
Great stuff!
