What can I say that hasn't been said? Oh I know, I can echo the sentiments that this is a must see movie
The movie overall is very compelling for its action, subtle references and homages -- and just that it carries you away with it
I got the feeling that it's really about telling a good story --- such as is the way of samurai/cowboy revenge movies -- it's not really dialogue, it's not really acting --- it's can you get me from there to here --- in other words, I think you go in knowing what's going to happen
And yes, it is not time synchronous, as in other QT flicks -- time is played around with, and context is reexamined OUTSIDE of being in linear time --
What it means to me is as an homage, a love story for so many styles and genres by QT -- and the irony is, the feel is there -- for the portion of the film that is samurai in nature, the feel is there --- from the snow, to the two story restaurant with the shoji sliding doors, to the garden, to the contrast of bold on white -- the vibe is there --- again, the dialog may not be as tight -- but the visuals are there --- for me to complain about dialog is as inane as to complain about such in a kung fu movie -- revenge is here and I as a viewer need to get there
I think I may have seen the most visceral samurai sword fight put on celluloid in a very long time -- it doesn't really seem to pull heavy on the wire techniques or on things like bullet time and shift of camera perspective -- in many ways, it's a traditional, almost loving take on the lone wolf samurai versus insurmountable odds
Singleminded - Revenge --- I think if I were to view it again, I probably would see things quite differently because it seems to me that no matter what, U's character was hell bent on it --- there is no intrusion of morality, in fact it is a vengeance based morality at work here -- almost karma by blade, but the true state of the matter is that we must guess about what really happened at the church massacre at this point -- we've gotten glimpses of it, and a look at the outcome, but not much more
A singular performance that stood out to me besides U is that of Daryl --- who knew she could play a downright nasty, seemingly violently insane, one eyed assassin --- there's more to this next Vol. but still -- very commanding on the screen -- very cold
The other fun performance was the cameo by Sonny Chiba as Hattori Hanzo -- of course, the otaku know that that name in itself has meaning -- ninja/samurai meanings -- it is in many ways a holy name to a genre in Japanese film -- the voiceovers of his cryptic pronouncements in Japanese vibe the movie with feelings of authenticity for the Japanese revenge drama --- what seems simple, is really complex
There are other otaku moments like U wearing something that looks like a Bruce Lee jumpsuit from one of his movies -- this movie is just chock full of effective use of different genres, loving homage, and just a plain fun ride
Anyway, I can't wait til February --- and for those wondering if Q has lost his muse --- I think that question has been answered by this film
(oh yeah and I believe one of my former girlfriends is having a birthday today -- why I remember this, I just don't know -- Happy 32 wherever you be)
