Pop-punk -- lemme see, whiny vocals, three chords, and very little differentiation between two minute blasts -- the things that separates the best of the genre such as legendary pioneers ALL and say the latest Blinky clone -- often is vocal melodies and harmony and catchy riffs -- and hella ironic, funny, intelligent lyrics
Well step up to the plate, BOWLING FOR SOUP is here for you -- perhaps you are familiar with the brilliant SUPERHIT single "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" -- these guys capture the fun of the Cars, hit on some retro Beachboys harmonies, with very catchy basic pop power chord melodies from the Weird Al school sans accordion -- almost makes you guilty for liking it TOO MUCH
Highlights include "Emily", the alterna-retro muted chug of "life without Lisa", the almost self-consciously cheesy catchy power ballad "Where to Begin" -- it's like a Bon Jovi outtake (HELLA COOL THO) -- "Self-Centered" has really a cool set of lyrics wrapped in upbeat 80 style stompy punk -- and you simply can't miss "Running from your dad" -- truly excellent song, really funny
If you need to smile or rock a smile on to your mug, this is a CD for you -- and hey, I'm not getting a damn red cent for this recommendation -- hear it soon, believe me later -- lotsa fun, this disc -- big pleasant surprise -- from the land that GREEN DAY forgot
