I know that I've been away for a while, here's a quick rundown of some of the CD's I spin for listens, and those that are good for keeping water spots off my teak desk
Quick Reviews:
3 Doors Down - Away from the Sun REVIEW: D
What the hell happened to these guys?!? The sophomore jinx has hit this band in a tragic way -- Gone is the freshness of "The Better Life", in with sappy ballads and very few compelling rockers -- the promise of the debut seems lost on this meandering whinefest -- Highlights are "When I'm Gone" and "Here without You", both are very excellent -- For the rest of the disc, I got this feeling that 3DD got captured by an electric version of Counting Crows-likeness -- blah, what am I not getting?!?!?
Cody Chestnutt - The Headphone Masterpiece REVIEW: A+
This one's a bit on the older side (2002)-- but very high quality -- Cody Chestnutt puts together a sonic MONO, yes MONO tour de force that combines many genres together with simple earnest quality soulful songs -- Contains alternative classics such as "Boylife in America", "Upstarts in a Blowout", our favorite, "My Women, My Guitars", "On a Joyride", "look good in leather", and the awesome "6 seconds" -- just truly awesome song crafting, and some of the freshest, soul/funk songwork on par with the masters like Stevie and Prince -- hopefully he stays on longer than Terence Trent WHO?
Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers REVIEW: A++
This review is such a pleasure to do -- this CD is just full of simply amazing power pop -- "Mexican Wine" just hooks you into a wonderful sonic journey of hooks, melody, and really intelligent (and oftentimes funny) lyrics -- Sometimes you say Beatles, classic smarts of Paul Simon, its Cars-80s or The Attractions style electric power pop, great vocal harmonies -- this CD also features the can't miss goodness of "Stacy's Mom", the best pop song I've heard in a good, long time.
The quality and diversity is obvious on slowed down efforts as "Hackensack" or "All Kinds of Time" -- the diversity of songs combined with catchy melodies, harmonies and great lyrics make it a simple easy joy to listen to -- This one is a can't miss -- our pick for this month and likely will be spun for awhile here
That's all for now, more to come in the next several days
