So anyways, as we are awash in supergroup soup -- in other words, seeing parts of former supergroups combine forces and drop CDs ... At the Lu, we have found one CD that we like a great deal for its straightforward rock
We give you our review of the Brides of Destruction's recent CD, Here Comes The Brides -- which for you keeping score at home is Nikki Sixx and Tracii Guns' group
Brides of Destruction - Here Comes The Brides: A
Do you yearn for the good old days? Then you're an old fucker like me ... ha
But in all seriousness, if you liked Shout era Crue or Appetite from GNR -- well, I have good news for you ... It ain't fucken 87 anymore, but this album kicks in your head with straightforward punk influenced rock goodness
Sometimes you wonder whether putting together two of the minds behind two great hard rock bands can get their shit together and IMPRESS -- well, no problems here
From the opener "Shut the Fuck Up" on through "I Don't Care", you get so much GD rock flavor -- STFU is a nice punky shredder ala Crue, and IDC is more along the lines of LA Guns and GNR
It's not reinventing the wheel here ... this is just that good rock that mulletheads have been waiting for since well, Nirvana and AIC killed the genre dead
In fact, it's interesting bc they take some darkish Soundgarden/AIC jangles and turn it into a hella cool power ballad in "I got a gun"
So what about London LeGrande -- the guy has pipes -- total 80s metal pipes, very convincing shrieking, darker growling, and can carry a fast paced rocker
My word, I'm gushing about this CD -- this CD is so great, it's like up from the dead next to your old cassettes -- "2x Dead" is more of an update, it sounds in Weiland and STP's debut vein -- it's sex type thing heaviness with catchy back in the day guitar doodling
Ok, so if you're an old fart and you're tired of listening to some kid's hip hop BS emanating from the car next to you at the light -- this one is a guilty cranker, and will make your speed sessions on the freeway oh-so-enjoyable
"Brace Yourself" is that song that I always wanted LA Guns to do, to break out big -- well Tracii has it in him, this one is a hard rock gem -- this one is all Tracii and London -- cool stuff
It's weird because "Natural Born Killers" is straight up pop rocks -- I mean, I guess they need the airplay -- this one tones it down a bit, but is still good rock
"Life" has kind of that teen movie uptempo rocker vibe -- again its more pop rock in style -- it's funny bc I thought it was kind of Michael Sweet lite -- London doesn't have the big range of MS, but carries it off well
"Revolution" is a fat Cabernet ... really heavy stuff with a catchy hook. And "Only Get So Far" is lighter time, it's power ballad time, it's guilty and good, lotso harmonies
Okay, so I'm not giving it a perfect score, I don't think some of the lighter numbers are very substantial -- I do like the overall tone of the album as there are no totally unlistenable tracks -- and other tracks are just vintage hard rock that sound so damn good
For my old farts, this one is for you ... AND ME TOO, ha
