I was reading something earlier on a Defense Department report on strategic communications -- I found it interesting because it echoed many of the critiques of our current policy of liberating Muslim states and fighting the war on terrorism
In short, here were the ideas:
THE PROBLEM IS NOT FINDING THE RIGHT MESSAGE, THE PROBLEM IS CREDIBILITY
Muslims do not hate our freedom, but rather they hate our policies.
American occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq has not led to democracy there, but only more chaos and suffering
The vast majority of Muslims object to the US's one sided support of Israel, and anti-Palestinian rights stance
The hypocritical and self-serving US policies which say they support democratizing and bringing freedom to Islamic countries -- while officially supporting and defending state tyrannies in Islamic states such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan, and in the Persian Gulf states
Unlike the 1980s paradigm that the Soviet bloc wanted to be liberated, there is no liberate us mentality in Arab countries -- yet the US still applies that model
American policy is not containment of terror -- it is seeking to convert Islamic civilization into accepting the value structure of Western Modernity

I'm not holding my breath for this internal report to get read
