B(e)Sides the 100

In an indication of how out of control and compulsive I was, I actually had narrowed it down to 504 --- yeah why the extra 4, right? LOL

Anyways, I think these are probably the ones that may sneak in and out of the 100 over time, and are pretty close to being a part of the list

And I am thinking of doing a Hawaiian one and a Metal/Hard Rock one in the near future -- probably after my batteries recharge from listening to all this music over the past two weeks or so

Imaginary Lover - Atlanta Rhythm Section

Comes from the Ambrosia era, is often mistaken for them -- this one has such an awesome darkness and groove to it -- and it's She Bop for the older generation

Sharing The Night Together - Dr. Hook

When I think about it, any of my 200 could be remade by local groups -- and many have, mind you LOL -- this one is a just well put together pop from the masters of stoner-OOF pop in the 70s

Dazz - Brick

110% Funk - the one that comes the closest to the god most high of funk -- Mr. Clinton

My Old School - Steely Dan

The Dan -- this one before my time -- but it's just good old fashioned piano boogie

Do What You Do - Jermaine Jackson

Why don't you confuse me with your tongue twisting lyrics? LOL -- how many takes did it take to get the lines right -- a KIKI classic

Hell - Squirrel Nut Zippers

All hail the new mambo kings! This one is a rather recent add-on to the big pool -- part of the Setzer movement of the past couple years -- the best of the bunch

Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell (w/ MJ)

Just was that little odd song that combined Dolbyish vox with a cool 80s dance groove -- and of course, King Midas on the chorus LOL

What You Won't Do - Bobby Caldwell

Just so soulful, mellow, and groovin' -- my friends wonder what is wrong with me?!?!?

You Make Me Feel Like Dancing - Leo Sayer

An early edition of the Happy Happy Joy Song -- 70s pop excellence

Working Man - Rush

Ah yes, the trio from the Great White North -- like so many songs from them -- and RUSH live is just jaw droppingly awesome -- straightforward rock here

Games Without Frontiers - Peter Gabriel

Who knew at the time I first saw this video that I would become such a big fan -- this one was real common on USA's Night Flight on Friday -- ex-of Genesis, the pre-Phil era

I Just Can't Let Go - David Pack

The mastermind behind Ambrosia, the guy just has that knack to put out great clean sounding pop -- Borrows the talents of friends James Ingram and Michael McDonald on this one, awesome three part harmony chorus

Yellow - Coldplay

The new masters of English pop -- I like this one for its larger guitar sound, as well as pop excellence

Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield

Jessie is a friend, with a girl's name -- guitar pop -- so close to the 100, this one is one the fringe

Ribbon In The Sky - Stevie Wonder

I remember this one from a friend's wedding I attended in 93 in LA -- always one of Stevie's great ones -- the songwriting can really get no better

Let's Go To Bed - The Cure

Let me take your hand, I'm shaking like milk -- umm okay -- just groovy synth pop from the 80s gods of college/alternative music

Cuts You Up - Peter Murphy

More KROQ and college goodness -- the ex-lead singer of Bauhaus breaks out with this cello driven college rock masterpiece

Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Crystal Gayle

The 70s lounge singing masterpiece from the lady long hair

My One And Only Love - Sting

This one is off 90s movie classic, Leaving Las Vegas -- Sting singing the standards, sometimes you can hear the fire crackling in the background, really

One Hundred Ways - James Ingram

When Quincy Jones simply ruled the earth -- it may not have 100, but damn this song has such a basic goodness and pop craftsmanship to it, it's a great listen

Desire (Come and Get It) - Gene Loves Jezebel

Lazy Sunday afternoons under a brown and red polluted sky, bbqing in college -- what you get is what you see -- huh?

Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen

The second era of Queen dominance begins with this rockabilly classic -- the video was of course slicker than hell, blame me I was 11 LOL

Blister In The Sun - The Violent Femmes

More tasty college music -- such a weird little catchy acoustic ditty

Cool It Now - New Edition

Yeah people my age singing about cooling it -- very implausible even today -- the best of the early NE stuff

Hold The Line - Toto

I remember seeing them perform this on some show in my distant memory -- about as solidly crafted a rock tune in its era -- with the big riff from Luke

Fight The Good Fight - Triumph

The follow-up to Allied Forces brought this big drums (ala Zep) sound with the heavy duty strum rocker -- has a religiosity and positivity in the lyrics and vibe

Shower Me With Your Love - Surface

I think of this one and my college gf at the time -- this one was a KOST-FM in LA special for studying to late at night

Lovergirl - Teena Marie

I don't know how much more hit and miss TM could be -- this one I think is from the Rick James production era, I could be wrong -- rocking dance pop

Hooked On You - Sweet Sensation

From the height of the Freestyle era, this monster dance song ruled Hawaii for a good few years -- oh yeah and still on 93.1 until this very day

One Way Love - TKA

This one was really big from the time that I had switched to listening to Amber and KWAI -- again from that Freestyle era, this one is very underrated

You Got Lucky - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

MTV ... pure and simple, this one a take off on the Mad Max post-apoc theme -- not really sure what they found at the end -- some mirror? LOL dunno

Rain In The Summertime - The Alarm

A pseudo-U2 sound -- great alt pop rocks from these college era KROQ favorites

Lonely Boy - Andrew Gold

This one from 77, I think -- it's a lighter version of the Supertramp sound -- seemed very catchy to me at the time -- more hooks than genius, still cool

There Must Be An Angel Playing (With My Heart) - The Eurythmics

After all these years, still have problems spelling their names -- this one is a bit obscure compared to their smash hits -- I think it has a really interesting quality to it, and Annie actually sings on this one

Burnin' For You - Blue Oyster Cult

Mediocre video for a great song -- this one has always been my favorite from BOC, not as big and pretentious, just straightforward riff rock

Time Passages - Al Stewart

This odd song from my childhood era -- I'm not sure why I like it so much, it is a very well put together song

Sway - Bic Runga

This one from 98 -- a friend at the time told me that this girl from New Zealand really could sing and had a great sound -- she was right

The Metro - Berlin

Before Top Gun, there was this synth pop beauty -- I always liked this one more than Sex (I'm A ...) -- redone kind of brilliantly by System of A Down, too

Grease - Frankie Valli

Okay, this one for you Bee Gees purist -- is written by them -- does appear on the One Night Live CD with them singing it -- This movie alone had such a BIG IMPACT on my generation -- it may be the Star Wars for women, it is that big -- and of course this song from the opening animated credits, so damn grooving

The Breakup Song (They Don't Write Em) - The Greg Kihn Band

Aw Aw Aw Uh Uhh Uh UHHH -- no need for more, no? talk about no lyrical ideas leading to something cool

Hot Child In The City - Nick Gilder

Hot Child In the City!!! -- running wild and looking pretty -- Hot Child in the City -- yeah, the top of the mountain of simple song writing, repetitive as hell, but Satan Inc. catchy (ed. note: was in the original 100, forgot to cut it)

Strawberry Letter 23 - The Brothers Johnson

It's kind of interesting how these guys don't really hold that prominent a part of music history -- yet they were so big in Hawaii -- this is the famous funky track

Waiting On A Friend - The Rolling Stones

Ok, the Stones looked OLD in this video -- and this was from 81-82 LOL -- it was this song and others from Tattoo You that made me a lifetime Stones fan and sucked me in deeper to listen to their other stuff

I Just Wanna Stop - Gino Vannelli

Amazing FM radio friendly song from this one-hit wonder -- this one has fallen a bit under the radar, but when you hear it, you're like oh yeah, this one is good

Sweet Baby - George Duke and Stanley Clark

This one is very unique -- both these guys are better known for their efforts in an entirely different genre -- this is just amazing FM radio pop

Do That To Me One More Time - The Captain and Tennille

I remember this as a comeback song for them -- where did they go, I wondered at the time -- every wonder why so many early 20s women are named Tennille, here's your answer -- you're welcome LOL

I Still Believe - Brenda K. Starr

Freakishly enough, I also have the Spanish version of this song as well -- I always think of right before leaving for LA in 88, this playing on the earphones

Black Coffee In Bed - The Squeeze

Early, early video on MTV -- some may like Tempted better, I have always been partial to this one -- I always think of these guys and the Finn Brothers (ex-Crowded House) of bringing back some of the musical elements to UK music rather than go purely new wave or alty

Laughter In The Rain - Neil Sedaka

This guy has such a smooth delivery and great arrangements to his songs -- this one again is just cool FM pop

Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder

I wondered for a long time when I was younger about why this one was called Sir Duke -- guess, I just wasn't paying attention to lyrics at the time -- I regret until this day my non-attendance of his 81 show at the Stadium

Guilty - Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb

This one is among that handful of BG or BGs appearances on songs -- this one is another pop masterpiece by the Brothers, this time moving Barb back on to the pop radar of the time

Time and Tide - Basia

The Polish diva of jazzy pop -- it's just too bad she was snowed under by her contemporary, Sade -- great first album, and then fell off my radar

Too Much Heaven - The Bee Gees

I remember taping this song of KIKI on my red carry around Panasonic tape player -- I think was my favorite song during 2nd grade, I remember playing it over and over and over -- This is another song that was a tough cut in the 100

White Wedding, Pt. 1 - Billy Idol

Okay, now how many of you refer to it by its proper name -- this amazing song was my favorite one around the time that Return of the Jedi was starting its six month delayed run here at Cinerama

Everybody Wants You - Billy Squier

MTV really put this guy over big -- I think there's a lot of shame about liking him because his rock is so over the top and obvious -- and in hindsight, kinda lem -- I still like you Billy LOL

Ain't Nobody - Chaka Khan

This one is such a great dance pop number -- it was in my opinion the king of the post-disco sound -- and is underrated by all but the gay disco scene -- I would tend to concur with the minority viewpoint here

Some Guys Have The Luck - Rod Stewart

Boy, talk about fall off and fallout, it seemed like after the whole disco era stuff, that Rod had nothing else to offer -- well in 85 with Camoflauge, he made a comeback of some kind -- another MTV video selection, Rod dances like he had to take a dump LOL

More Than A Feeling - Boston

This one I got turned on to in the era of the second coming of 98 Rock -- actually it was their Third Stage album that I bought, then I read up on them, and borrowed my cousins first two LPs -- amazing arena rock

Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon

Thom of Radiohead once described it as the most sexy song ever in their cover -- this one from the Spy Who Loved Me, heck the title is a lyric in the song -- perhaps not as great for its lyrics as its earnest emotional delivery, great song

Through The Fire - Chaka Khan

Another HS ass grabbing classic (even though it preceded HS by a little) -- this one is all Chaka, amazing vox on this song -- this is the textbook example for all 80s R&B dance pop ballads

Dream Police - Cheap Trick

I remember when this was a WORLD PREMIERE video -- yikes! During Martha Quinn's show in the afternoon -- just great rock from Trick, who then had a few other songs to play besides I Want You and Surrender LOL

Got To Be Real - Cheryl Lynn

Late of the bombed out movie, Undercover Brother -- this one is hella 80s roller skate disco music -- also brings out the old ass freeqs to the dance floor at Rumours every Saturday Night in 2005

When I See You Smile - Bad English

Hmm, I think of this one and the other one he voiced, Missing You -- this one has the brilliant Jon Cain piano, and the big 80s rock chorus -- get out the lighters, and sway those arms ... Whoa-OHHHHH! lol

Can You Feel The Beat - Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam with Full Force

This one was from the early Freestyle era -- that point where breaking was fading out -- this one is a great one that has a vox style that reminds of Debbie Deb's When I Hear Music

Miss You - The Rolling Stones

The Stones foray into disco -- like a bluesy disco, only because of the harmonica? Fat, fat bass line on this one -- made the crowd go off in their 98 show at the Stadium

Slow Hand - The Pointer Sisters

I think of the 80s teen movie where the girl posed as a boy at a high school to write a paper at her own school -- her brother Bradley was cleaning the house with a towel singing this song LOL -- this one is so KIKI

(Catch Me) I'm Falling - Pretty Poison

I remember this one from the afternoon dance show on USA -- the first time I heard it, I went hunting for it -- I still have it on single, yeah Vinyl

Just You 'N Me - Chicago

I always get a mellow happy feeling when I hear this one, childhood era stuff

Because of You - The Cover Girls

I always think of a dance we had at Naniloa Hotel in Hilo on a club trip -- had a lot of fun dancing with those Waiakea HS chix LOL

Goodbye Girl - David Gates

Okay, this guy is better known for his work in Bread -- this movie, The Goodbye Girl, I think featured Richard Dreyfuss soon after Close Encounters -- Gates voice is just so awesomely clean and earnest -- great stuff, I love it

Share My World - DeBarge

This one is KWAI era stuff, I think -- another HS ass grabbing classic -- DeBarge just was such great music and really a big part of my musical memory

I.G.Y - Donald Fagen

I never knew the title of this one for such a long time -- I assumed that it was a SD song because it has such an original sound to it -- this one is KIKI era stuff

Where Is The Love? - Roberta Flack with Donny Hathaway

This one is really fun to sing at karaoke -- but besides that is so soulful and open in vocal style, lots of triplets here -- awesome R&B from childhood

I Can't Tell You Why - The Eagles

I remember watching this video on KDSC on Lianne's show -- now that is geekville supreme for memory, no? LOL -- this has always been my favorite Eagles ballad, great soaring vox from Tim the bassist

Reasons - Earth, Wind and Fire

This one has always been in my TOP 5 soul ballads of all-time, hard to cut this one from the 100 -- Philip's falsetto is so dynamic in this one, the arrangement is awesome, too

Come Go With Me - Expose

Yes, the lifesaver tube dresses -- thank you, MTV -- this one is early HS dance kind of freestyle

Too Much, Too Little, Too Late - Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams

Before Let's Hear It For The Boy, and of course, the lengthy career of Johnny -- this one is a just a great R&B song -- got to see Johnny in 89 while on the job ushering, and he sung this with Deniece as a guest -- awesome

Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad - Meat Loaf

Now, now Cous Cous LOL (South Park joke about how one character named all these 70s and 80s acts) -- I remember this one from my Song Hits magazine, the fat guy with the stringy hair and the clean white long sleeve shirt really sweats it into this one -- with the most arena rock, audience participation friendly chorus

The One I Love - REM

120 Minutes on MTV -- most of the time I would miss it because it was on so late on Sundays, sheesh -- this one is the one that introduced me to REM, off Document No. 5

Harden My Heart - Quarterflash

Now what the fuck was this video about -- it was at a construction site ... umm okay -- cool song, though -- this one from the KIKI Music Survey

Creep - Radiohead

Perhaps the most menacing one way love song since Every Breath You Take -- never more pop again, Radiohead has long since shied away from this one, their biggest mainstream hit

Don't Talk To Strangers - Rick Springfield

I remember Rick touring Hawaii for his new album -- my cousin went, she said it was awesome -- I was kind of jealous at the time LOL

Twilight Zone - Golden Earring

Okay, flat out my favorite MTV video of all-time -- awesome song as well

Yes, I'm Ready - KC and Teri DeSario

A KIKI classic -- pulpy pop, cheesy as hell -- much to love about it LOL

Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant

What the fuck is he yelling at the beginning, turn down that cheesy engine sound LOL -- damn this song was so huge in 81 -- working so hard like a soldier, and other bizarre lyrics

Shadow Dancing - Andy Gibbs

I remember seeing him performing this on Bandstand -- and then the typical lame Dick Clark interview after -- even then, I knew it was lip synched -- this one is top notch disco from Andy, with the Brothers on the chorus

No One Is To Blame - Howard Jones

Oh, how MTV pushed this guy, too -- this one is a nice closer to his moment in the sun -- it's almost an apology that he really wasn't THAT great -- love this song

Forever - Kenny Loggins

I remember having a crush on some girl in high school about the time this song came out -- she told me I wrote cool letter Ds -- I was speechless, but I had this song LOL lem.

I'd Still Say Yes - Klymaxx

They couldn't really shoot straight on their other stuff necessarily -- but between this one and I Miss You, awesome songs

Fantastic Voyage - Lakeside

Big fat funk for your roller disco life -- fun song

Radio Ga Ga - Queen

I remember this one for including clips of Fritz Lang's 30s Sci-Fi silent classic, Metropolis -- All we hear is Radio Goo Goo, Radio Ga Ga -- almost like he saw the future and all this right wing talk radio crap as well as other musical diarrhea

Lonesome Loser - The Little River

I remember this song from the Music Fest -- what a fucking lame ride that was!!! LOL -- hard to pick between this and Reminiscing

Almost Paradise - Mike Reno and Ann Wilson

Well, where are they now -- Ann is a paranoid person about being fat -- and Loverboy is playing some county fair in middle America, no doubt -- the love song from some 80s movie that escapes me right now, I want to say Footloose -- anyways, hey, we're knocking on heaven's door, and will find other words that rhyme with the sound -OR

Hot Blooded - Foreigner

It's funny because this is in many ways like disco rock -- and I think KISS cribbed the riff to do Tears Are Fallin' and Lick It Up -- take a listen to see if I'm crazy for thinking that

Hopelessly Devoted To You -- Olivia Newton John

So what do you do after a fight -- yes I go out to the porch and burst into song -- the Aussie diva just ruled music for a time then, song after song after song

Eminence Front - The Who

Just a jam-oriented song with a simple riff -- before they faded out for a while, would have never known much about it without MTV

She's A Beauty - The Tubes

This one is a close second for my all-time favorite MTV video -- actually I remember they played this the first night they had competing vid show Night Tracks on the Superstation TBS -- great song, that great SHHUUKKK sound

Breakout - Swing Out Sister

Such a great catchy FM pop song, has many of the elements of other groups, today I thought maybe Go West and Level 42 as well -- anyways, say what you want to say ... and breakout

Off The Wall - Michael Jackson

Just get down to serious disco pop -- all business here, this was the one that made me think of MJ as a force to be reckoned with, and all of this pre-Thriller

Too Much Time On My Hands - Styx

Pretty crappy vid for this one -- ta ta ta ticking away from me, cool song

Okay, not for another few years .... LOL
It was fun re-visiting some of these tracks, and even those that didn't make it -- I was thinking that when I recharge, I may do a Hawaiian songs version and a Hard Rock/Metal version

And for your Baker's 100 ....

Don't Cry Out Loud - Melissa Manchester

It's just too obvious LOL.
