Who is

Looking out for you?

I have been wondering out loud about such things lately as it has seemed that there are many aspects of life now where government no longer provides a buffer against insecurity or bad turns of events -- I guess I take it personal because economic insecurity is something near and dear to our hearts here in 5-0

I have always had a problem with the way that credit cards are marketed and so easily obtained -- Well soon coming to an America near you, a bill favored by the credit card companies that will make it harder for people with massive credit card debt to seek bankruptcy

Of course, this is necessary, because in the estimation of the credit card companies -- well, they have nothing at all to do with this, RRIIIGGGHT -- people abuse credit cards and then the bankruptcy law

Of course, the facts that most personal bankruptcies are due to unanticipated medical conditions, divorce, or job loss seem to have eluded the discussion -- oh by the way, our senior Senator in Washington (you know, the guy that brings all the money he can carry home to us) voted in favor of it -- tell me, what state is he from, again? That sounds a lot like the reasons why the back pages of PBN are cluttered and obliterated by bankruptcy, foreclosure, and lien listings -- so what state is he from again? And wouldn't it help more Hawaiians to prevent the passage of this bankruptcy reform bill -- rather than pass the Akaka bill, just wondering aloud

Someone should help get out the information in this age of Schiavo, MJ, and sensational stories about where to glut yourself on cheap eats -- I find it very humorous that a week or two ago, the senior Senator decided to write an op-ed about his position on Alaskan drilling, and no one has bombed him with communications about his position on bankruptcy relief

So why else is this bankruptcy thing screwed up -- ever heard of an asset protection trust? -- basically it's a way for people to protect their wealth from seizure and foreclosure -- well, I shouldn't say people, I should say the extremely wealthy

And it's not for not trying, but amendments to the bill that would have protected bankruptcies for legitimate medical emergencies, protecting the homes of fixed income elderly, and for war veterans and soldiers transitioning back to society -- all voted down -- I guess these are not enough of a hardship, credit card companies must be PAID and IN FULL

I guess I am taking it personal because of living out here in Hawaii -- and seeing that government on all levels really is out of tune with the realities of most people -- who is middle class and lower in Hawaii anyways, if not most of us

I don't have to list off the litany of things in the environment that point to the fact that people's lives are becoming less secure economically -- job stability? what? -- ever tried to get a job after being unemployed? takes a while, no -- health insurance? no no, work for us part-time -- pension or after employment benefits? no sorry, I hope you die soon

I know that some people have issues with people who don't have a handle on their lives -- like I'm better than you because I have managed my finances better, how dare you declare bankruptcy -- like you're so irresponsible for doing so

As an attorney, I see bankruptcy for what it is -- RELIEF -- I guess, when you bring in the tightening of the bankruptcy law -- well, no relief in sight, we'll figure out a way for you to pay it back (and then after you die, your family, and then after that ...)

Essentially people in that situation will be forced to work for their creditors -- I wonder how that must be to cut your entire pay check over to your creditors while you try to figure out how to also make other ends meet

What's in your wallet (We Want It) -- a love song from your American credit card industry -- and oh by the way, Thanks Dan

This is a topic near and dear to my heart since I've been using credit to pay oncoming bills due to you-know-what over the course of 2 years. If things don't go as planned I may have to claim what you mention in this little article of yours.

The thing that I cannot understand is how America plans to deal with the numerous amounts of gen-x'ers that will have no social security, no medical benes and no pension from any company because no companies are offering those things anymore. I am assuming gen-x is supposed to work till they can no longer pee or crap on their own in order to support themselves. Retirement is a myth no?

Take into account that the cost of living here is crazy, the rental market is non-existant and the large amount of jobs that pay in the 43K range that one NEEDS to live "ok" here is simply vapor... i think you will see a lot of people living on the streets if this bill passes.
