The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

I haven't been able to write up a coherent review about this one, even though I have been spinning it now for close to a month. In the final analysis, I am in the middle of the pack on this one, and shall probably at the end of this review leave it at that.

Okay, so album #5 of the "bro-sis" collab that is the White Stripes ... some people praise this album as if it is the second coming of something really big ... they don't say what (so everyone prep for Godzilla, I guess?) ... some people view this album as the weeder or the album that cuts away the bandwagon fans that came on with the last album, Elephant

My impression of it is really quite simple ... there may be many people who proclaim their undying love of this album, there will be 100x that that do not find this album to be coherent, focused, or worthwhile to listen to. This is not to say that this effort is bereft of quality tracks ... there certainly are great tracks on this one, including "Blue Orchid", "The Doorbell", "Forever for Her (Is Over For Me)" and "The Denial Twist".

The rest of the album is at times listenable, sometimes not so much ... very garage/lo-fi, very rough feeling at times. As odd as it sounds, they took a folksy turn on many of the tracks, and lots of Zeppish sounding stuff (esp. Plantesque vox abound). They took out all manner of instruments in this one, and produced some instruments in a more pronounced manner in some tracks ... if you have heard it, you know what I mean, it's of that one louder than the other tracks kind -- loud piano, loud drums, you got me?

It's mishmash type stuff ... that one really has to reach to the bottom of their easy grading hearts to call it of Exile-FMS quality, I think that would be totally and completely misleading. It's cool that these guys can be honest and say that this is the direction they want to take this effort, but it didn't gibe with what I like to listen to presently, in the final analysis

If you like the experimental side of WS, you may like this one better than most. It's definitely not for everybody, I won't be back in for full listens ... selective tracks are very good, though

Our evaluation: C+
