I thought it was very funny today that while I was eating lunch, the custodian's phone rang ... and his phone's ringtone was the quasi-stereo MC Hammer's Can't Touch This
I think that sometimes it is possible to go too fast ... or be so consumed by something that everything you are paying attention to, really in the grander scheme of things ... is probably not as cool as all that you are missing
I noticed that a lot of people are putting big time focus on things that are far beyond the pale ... far beyond the things that they can control. Gas prices, house prices, wars, natural disasters, ... all these things make me say, yes, it's bad ... I can't be bothered to watch the same story over and over about it though -- there's too much other important stuff that I could focus on
For example, I've slowed down my pursuit of current music and am letting the collection that I have assembled from earlier this year soak in -- I was thinking that I was in the grand race to no place
Like a Purgatory for Music Snobbery ... I certainly wasn't as bad as those characters in High Fid ... but pretty close. Being out on the edge of the avant garde is pretty ... hmmm, a pretty aimless state to be in
I mean, it gets to the point where you go ... now what? It's like the pace of which you can get cool music is totally mediated by what labels put out, mainstream or indie whatever ... there's a bottleneck there
That is why I admire one of my co-slavers, who has the Ms. Crow best of disc on replay ... over and over and over
Yes, it places me somewhere that I need a good pair of headphones for work ... but otherwise, you gotta like these people that lock in on something, and say HEY, that's what I like ... I don't care if its irrelevant, it's relevant to me
What's the point about this ... well, if you focus on the important things in your life whatever they may be ... you'll probably enjoy life, and some of the good things (like music or art) and the others in your life more
So I turn to what I have assembled in terms of music over the past year and go, man I wish some of these artists are really great and their music holds up ... too bad that they will never be mainstream anytime soon
And it's not about being a up to the minute music snob ... it's just enjoyable to see how much I appreciate this because it entertains me ... rather than chasing down the latest, newest, bestest, hippestest, madeupwordish stuff, I think I am enjoying holding pat for a while
Sometimes it's all about enjoying what you have rather than constantly looking for greener grass ... endlessly searching for a new niche, when you generally already know what you groove to
