Homestand, Game 1

Well, Yankees back into action again today against the Tigers -- it's a bit too bad that I have to miss a big chunk of it live today ... but, I guess I can catch up later

Inside, impressions of DET at NYY (45/162)
---

On a rainy, windy, and utterly unMay like night at the Stadium

TOP 1: Mussina going for Yankees today -- Inge grounds to second, one away -- Martinez grounds one up the middle, Jeter gloves, spins, and throws offline to first, pulling Giambi off the bag ... an infield single -- Svelte Rodriguez goes down swinging, two away -- Runner at first for Guillen, he hits a broken bat grounder up the middle, Cano fields and steps on second, the force play retires the side

BOT 1: Ledezma going for Tigers today -- Jeter grounds to short, one down -- Womack grounds the first pitch to second, two down -- Sheffield rips one right at third for a line out to end a 1-2-3 inning for Ledezma

TOP 2: White wastes no time singling the first pitch through the hole and into left
-- Young flies to left, one away -- Monroe down looking ... frozen, two down -- runner at first, two down for Pena, he goes down swinging to retire the side

BOT 2: Ledezma works a full count to Matsui, and he gets Matsui to fly out to left, one down -- ARod launches a solo shot into the right center stands, Yankees lead 1-0 ... and ironically he is 3-for-3 against Ledezma, all 3 were HRs, wow

One down for Posada, he goes down swinging for the second out -- Giambi rips the first pitch down the first base line, gloved by Pena at first, he throws Giambi out while sitting to end the inning -- great defensive play

TOP 3: Logan goes down looking, one down -- Inge grounds the first offering to short, two down -- Martinez loops out to center to retire the side

BOT 3: Bernie lines out to center, one down -- Cano grounds to second ... Martinez bobbles, Cano in safe at first E4 -- Jeter hits one hard, long, and ... FOUL to left -- he grounds back to the pitcher, Ledezma looks at second, then fires at first to get Jeter, two away

1:58PM HST

TOP 4: Pudge hits an easy comebacker to Muss, Muss throws to first for the first out -- Guillen goes down swinging, two away -- White hits a single up the middle for his second hit of the game

Runner at first, two down for Young, he hits a hard ground shot to second, Cano robs him of a single to retire the side

BOT 4: Sheffield hits a leadoff single through the left side hole -- Matsui lines the first pitch to center, one down -- ARod hits another drive to right center ... GONE, a two run HR, the Yankee lead is now 3-0 ... and yeah that is 4-for-4 in more ways than one, wow!!!

Not to be outshined, Posada cranks the first offering from Ledezma into the left field stands, a solo HR, the NY lead is now 4-0

Giambi lines one into right over the leaping second baseman for a single ... the hit parade continues -- Bernie absolutely smashes one to right ... it is over White's head, he misjudges it ... it rolls to the wall, runners now second and third

Cano flies to left ... Sojo waves in Giambi to tag, White's throw is WAYYOFF ... Giambi scores, two away -- the score is now 5-0

Two down, runner on second for Jeter, he pops up to right to end the rally

2:19PM HST

TOP 5: Monroe grounds to short, one down -- Pena grounds the 3-2 pitch to first, two away -- Logan pops out to short to retire the side

BOT 5: Womack grounds to short, Guillen field buts his throw one hops to first and Pena can't handle it ... E6 ... on the 1-0 to Sheffield, Womack steals second

Runner at second now for Sheffield, he absolutely smashes one into the left field stands, a two run shot, Yankees now lead 7-0

Ledezma is taken out of the game, Ginter in to pitch for the Tigers -- still none down, Matsui slashes one the opposite way and it goes into the leftfield corner, a double -- ARod draws a walk, runners now first and second

Posada hits a laser into the stands in right center, a three run HR -- the NY lead is now 10-0, with still no one retired

Giambi loops a single the other way into left -- Russ Johnson in as a PR for Giambi -- Bernie lines a single to right past the first baseman ... just fair down the line, the runner advances to third on the play

Ginter couldn't get anyone out, he will be yanked for Spurling -- Cano grounds the first pitch into a 443 double play, one run scores on the play, the score is now, 11-0

Two down for Jeter, he grounds the first pitch to second to end the inning

TOP 6: Russ Johnson in to play first -- Inge grounds to third, one out -- Martinez hits one right back at the ducking Muss, a line single to center -- since the rout is on, looks like Trammell is inserting replacements into the games for the Tigers

Vance Wilson in as a PH for (Once) Pudge -- Wilson goes down looking at the FC payoff pitch, two down -- Jason Smith in as a PH for Guillen -- runner at first, two down for Smith, he flies the first pitch to left to retire the side

BOT 6: Spurling still going for Tigers -- Tigers make wholesale changes on defense: Wilson now catching, Smith at short, and Marcus Thames out in left

On the first pitch to Smith, the ball is delivered behind him, the bench is warned -- on the next pitch, Q beans Smith in the upper back, and he and Torre are ejected from the game

Q is urging the Tigers bench to come get him if they don't like it, they mass in front of the dugout but don't come out -- cooler heads prevail and Torre and Q leave the dugout
